Things You Should Keep In Mind In Home Interior Design
Ideally, when you’re doing home interior design you want to create a space that shows the personality and preferences of yourself and your family. And the home design should be one that can satisfy your requirements and aspirations for years.
This is where professional insight like the home design tips we are going to share with you will be useful.
As you shall see, we will not just give you practical tips, but also try to reveal to you how you can think like an interior designer.
So, whether you’re designing a new home, redoing your kitchen interior, or refreshing your home decor, here are 5 tips to remember in home interior design.
- Remember, it’s YOUR home
- You need to find your style
- Ask for paint, wallpaper and fabric samples and do trial and error
- You can transform old looks into completely fresh ones
- Size and scale your room-wise furniture
Now, let’s look into each of these points in a little more detail.
Remember, it’s YOUR home
While planning your design, you will come across all kinds of inspiration – from design magazines to mood boards on home decor websites and so on.
You might find yourself getting all kinds of ideas from them, which is when you need to remember the crucial thing:
It’s YOUR home, which should speak to YOUR tastes.
While you should always take inspiration from other sources, it’s important for you to put your own stamp and make them work for you.
Remember, you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your home (especially if you do work from home), so it needs to be a space you feel comfortable in.
From my own experience as an interior designer in Bangladesh, I can tell you that this is the thing I stress the most to all of my clients.
You need to find your style
Everyone will have their own design style. You need to find yours.
Do you prefer a sparsely designed room, or do you want your room to be luxuriously decorated with a lot of furniture, modern amenities and so on (like penthouse design)?
Seek inspiration from various sources
Now coming to gathering inspiration and ideas, which I referred to just now.
You can get inspirational material from various sources like magazines, journals, Instagram, Pinterest, and much more.
Once you’ve got a sizable amount of inspiration you can start visualising the looks and functionalities you want your home to have.
A good way of doing this is to take printouts of online images, cut out pictures from magazines and paste them all onto a large sheet or board. This will be your very own mood board.
Now you can easily see things like how textures work on different surfaces, which fabrics work where and so on.

Try to list out what you DON’T want
Another insight I have gained into interior design clients over my experience of working in Bangladesh home design.
People often struggle to list out what they DON’T like.
Worse, sometimes they include some elements that they want to avoid into their design ideas without knowing or noticing it.
This can be anything from a particular colour you don’t like in a room to a piece of furniture that brings back unpleasant memories.
Whatever these be, it’s crucial that you have them listed out so you can remain alert and not include them into your design plan.
This can be especially useful in living room design.
Ask for paint, wallpaper and fabric samples and do trial and error
Paint, wallpaper and fabrics are the important things that you want to sample before you finalise your choices.
For example by painting in small patches, taping wallpaper samples to the wall, and by draping and/or pinning fabric samples to places like curtain rails and chairs.
Let them remain for a few days.
See how you like the look over time, especially at different times during the day.
Remember, how colours look can depend on natural lighting and the time of the day. This is what makes it especially crucial for you to sample different paints.
Pro tip: Remember, what looks good in your neighbour’s house may not look good in yours.
You can transform old looks into completely fresh ones
If you’re redesigning your home, you need to thnk more carefully.
A new home is like a blank picture canvas – you can experiment as you want. An existing home on the other hand, offers limited opportunities for new ideas.
Look at the existing layout and try to think how it can be improved.
Maybe a sofa can be reupholstered, or a wall repainted.
It’s important to make a list of which furniture pieces you should keep.
Start from the beginning
Like I said at the very beginning, home design can be difficult.
You may not know where exactly to start.
Here is my suggestion: start at the very beginning – from the floor if necessary, by thinking whether your home flooring selection is working or not.
Then you move to fabrics on the floor, then to the furniture and so on.
Starting at arbitrary places like a sofa or a bed limits your style and choices.
Size and scale your room-wise furniture
When deciding furniture pieces, think about scale. In large rooms you need larger furniture than you need in small rooms.
However, small rooms do need one large/prominent furniture piece, as an accent piece.
Remember to have correct measurements before placing any orders.
If you are designing a small house, consult with a small house interior designer.
Building within your space
Good space planning and management is key to home interior design.
Distribute out furniture to avoid cramped looks.
Remember to have one accent piece as a focal point.
If you are looking for furniture like kitchen cabinet design, you need to consult with a good custom furniture maker.
Important points in residential interior design: conclusion
With these pointers in mind, you are ready to start designing your own home.
You can try to DIY, but I would suggest consulting with a trained designer first to kickstart the flow of ideas and review your working style.
